EXHIBITION AT CASA DE CULTURA

NETWORKING WITH THE LOCAL AREA

At this year’s VAD we continue our commitment to fostering creation and research based on digital media in the local region, setting up connections with cultural agents in our surrounding area who share similar interests and approaches, by exhibiting the work of artists who live and work in the region:

· Manual d'instruccions: an interactive performance by Nico Baixas, who will kick off VAD 2010 with the video installation that he officially presented at the MAPA Festival in Pontós. The installation is the result of the VAD/MAPA co-production agreement, and was selected through a public call for projects.

· Light Skin, by Nathalie Speter, a French artist who has enjoyed a residence at the Centre de CreacióContemporànea NAU CÔCLEA, will present the results of her researchprocess.

· Cub3D/Origami/Analog are the three installations that were created by participants in the Experimental MAPPING Workshop organised by LABFÀBRICA in CELRÀ.

· Particle is the latest creation by Alex Posada, a pioneer digital artist who lives in the Girona region. The installation will be presented the 8 and 9 of October at the Claustre de La Mercè

HUMAN RELATIONSHIP

In order to ensure the continuing presence of international artists at the festival although there has been no international call for works this year, the VAD team has selected six works, in conjunction with Gala Pujol: six visions that explore different aspects of human beings. These works generate impossible portraits; speculate on the futility of trying to capture the soul of the other; show the fragile nature of emotions within the family; seek an impossible dialogue with the media; address the need to joint together in order to face hostile landscapes; and question the significance of large-scale massevents. These six works will be exhibited with two works that are competing forawards (Erase Love and Ser en el desèsser), which share a similar spirit and conceptual base to the criteria that guided the curated section of the exhibition.

Casilda Sánchez (EUA) - As inside as the eyes can see
Provmyza (Rússia) - Despair
Hillerbrand + Magsamen (EUA) - Four Place Setting
Owen Eric Wood (Canadà) - Holobomo
Joachim Smetschka (Àustria) - Instant
Democracia (Madrid) - Ne vous laissez pas consoler

IN COMPETITION

The call for works to participate in this year’s VAD was only targeted at artists from Spain, who will compete for the Metropolis Prize, and artists from the Girona region, who are in the running for the Fundació Fita Prize. We received around 200 works, from which we have selected a total of thirty-four(thirty one single-channel works and three installations), which will be screened and available for individual viewing “on-demand.”
